drumline (20k image)There is a certain recycled ingredient that seems to show up in at least three movies a year. Take one young, gifted kid, who can't get along well with others, and mix him up in the "real world" amongst jealous peers and a father-like adult. Toss in some situations that would make anyone want to quit life, don't forget a love story, and then stir. Poof! You now have a PG-13 film that will be about as timeless as Howard the Duck. These films thrive on today's trends and music, and thus end up being outdated two years after their inception.

Drumline follows this pattern perfectly. The movie was full of great acting and some killer marching band sequences, but the overdone story along with the random appearance of rap artist Petey Pablo was enough to give this movie a 2 out of 5 rating.

Devon comes from the mean streets of Harlem just graduating High School. After never giving a thought towards college, he accepts a full scholarship to play in the marching band at a university in Atlanta. Having been the best back in Harlem, Devon isn't accustomed to things like teamwork and following orders, but that is what is required of him. Does everything turn out okay in the end? I'd hate to ruin the plot for you since I'd be ruining the plot of about 300 other movies.

Don't get me wrong. Even though I was never in the marching band, I enjoy listening to it as much as the next guy. The problem is that it's only cool for about fifteen minutes during halftime. (Band members are probably throwing things at the computer screen right now). After that, you have to rely on things like "plot" and "intriguing story".

Make Orlando Jones YOURS!
There was one other redeeming quality about this movie - Orlando Jones, the 7-UP guy. Upon first seeing him, I immediately laughed recalling him walk down the street telling strangers to "Make 7 - UP YOURS!" But I quickly forgot his old antics as he put forth a solid performance as the token father-like figure.

Sadly, cool drumming and Orlando Jones are not enough to make me recommend this movie to a bored inmate in a county jail, but if you're in a band, you'll probably tell me to go to hell and see it anyway. If that's the case, enjoy yourself and Petey Pablo while you're at it.

I think that drumline was an excellent movie. I would give it a 4 out of 5. Maybe my view is different because i'm a minor but, i feel that the movie showed everything that we (teenagers) go throw in our life. If u dig deeper than just what u see and reflect this on our everyday life, i think that u get a totally different picture.

There have been many rave reviews for "Drumline" from family and friends beyond the drums.
More children have come home being energized about doing their homework and studying,so they can have a better future thru education, not just having a good time.
Most definitely the feel of the "Drumline",and acting skills of Mr.Cannon.
A combination of all of the above has had many returning to see the movie 2,3,maybe more times!
Packed theater.
I will go Monday to see the movie I have anxiously awaited to enjoy,no doubt in my mind when I saw Mr.Cannon.
Now, I am looking for Gross ticket sales.

My name is Toree and I heard that there making a drumline 2. I also heard that smily high school from houston Tx is going to be in it. I'm in the band myself and What I want to know is how they got into the movie.I also want to know if there looking for anymore bands. Because if they are I would make a better suggesstion than smily, I'm from beaumont Tx and I'm in the coldest band you'll ever see my school name is central high school. Weve beat smily at our first battle of the band this year. So please who's ever picking the bands for drumline 2 e-mail Toree from beaumont and see if you can give central a chance.

DrumLine was an excellent movie. It was filled with good emotions of love and triumphant skills. The movie teaches a lesson in itself that we all can apply to our own life. Well Done! It puts you in the shoes of a "know it all" musician, and shows you the lessons he learns in life.

Being in the band, and knowing how life is in it, Drumline is by FAR one of the BEST movies i have ever seen, and i am a very big movie critic. The artistic acting, the performance of the different very talented bands, the awesomely selected cast, just made this movie arguably the best movie of the year.

Yep! I understand your opinion. The movie was good and it did carry a traditional storyline. For people who love black college bands, it was awesome. Regardless of anyone's opinion...it (the movie) made a lot more money than any of us did posting on this page. Amen.

I think drumline was a AWESOME movie. I loved it! All the people that were in this movie were great. I loved music before and this movie only made me love it more. I hope they make a 2nd movie but it will be hard to beat the 1st movie. Drumline was by far the best movie of the year. I own the movie and atleast watch it 1ce everyday. Me and my friend thought this movie was the greatest and I have yet to see a movie as good. So brovo to all the people who helped put this movie together.

DRUMLINE, well what can i say, i went over to Las Vegas on holiday and bout this dvd, it insired me to go back to basics at school and learn to play the snare drum, but comin from the uk it was hard, no schools wanted to help me out, so i bought a snare practise pad from rowland and a dvd from there site, ive been playin now for 2 years. i took my snare drum practise pad into college and wanted to just go into a room and play so i did, i played it too loud and before i new it i had a crowd of people listen to me, my college music teacher told me to play it on a real snare drum so i did, it wa fantasic. Later in the college year my teachers told me to apply for different colleges for drumming, not knowin that the teachers and local comuntity had started a collection to get me into an amercan college. i recieved a letter through the poost offerin me a place and ive never looked back since. im 19 now and moved back to the uk after spenidn a year in amercia fantastic fun just waitin to show the college what i ave learned.. Please bring out a drumline 2 i wana see what happens with devon miles...!!! DRUMLINE IS INSPIRING. !!!!

here are my thoughts.
I was drum captain of both my high schools(before i moved)and after watching this movie i wanted to puke. Ya its got drum parts ya its got some cool scenes, but the maority of the movie is bogus.Let me ask you have any of you ever heard of dci or dca?thats where its at. its takes true discipline to perfect youre art thats what being a drummer is all about. This movie dosent show that, its says make alot of flashy moves and youll always win.Any body reading this post i hope will write me an email, because id like to show you what real drumming is about or check out this website gulfcoastsound.org Its the site of a senor corp, with drum spots still available. its in houston texas were having drum practise this sat, i hope any one who wants to join will e-mail the corp or get in touch with me.DRUMMER OF ALL AGES AND ABILITIES WELCOME.

I loved the movie Drumline. I'm a drummer myself. I've been playing for almost 7 years now. I go to Stephen Decater High School in Berlin MD. I also play set for the jazz band. My band director said that I am the first girl in the school to play the drumset for jazz band. In marching band I play the snare. Many people say I'm the best that they have at school. I think it was tight how on the movie we got to listen to other bands.I can't wait to see another Drumline type movie.

Drumline The Movie huh...??? Well,...I can say that it was a great movie, and caused alot of people to join HBCU/HBHS marching bands, BUT it gave people a FALSE perception of what those/these bands actually are. They didn't manage to show you the blood, sweat, and tears that it takes to get one of these bands together. I still feel that they could've mad this movie better, and if they plan on doing a "Drumline 2", do it right this time. I'm a REAL musician/PERCUSSIONIST (notice how I didn't say "drummer"

You man, first off on ther movie, it was a good movie I liked the concept and it really gave SOME (not all or enough) insite on the world of a marching band;BUT! first off Nick Cannon can't even really drum, if you watch the movie and pay attention to there hands you'll see that on some parts there sticks don't even hit the drum. most of the Cadisies they played were hardly collage matterial too, I'm a fresh man in High school (SMHS Stone Mountain High) and I can already play every Cadise off of that movie on every instrament easily( including the snair parts). If you acually read the credits you'd know that some of the collage bands was made up of DEKALB COUNTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS. I am an accompliced Percussionist of stone mountain High(ATL GEORGIA) (NOT DRUMMER; Anyone who use the fraise "drummer" I already know that they sux and I wouldn't even waist my time Roasting them). also for all you people who think that you band is acually "good"....... WAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA, I would love to see you try and come compete with atlanta HIGH SCHOOL marching bands, you won't stand a chance, for those who don't believe me check out the REAL world of marching band at www.showtimemag.com . I would love to see a Drumline 2 BUT I ask that they'd atleast cast people who ACUALLY PLAY PERCUSSION instead off actors who just move there arms and sticks to a PRERECORDED drum Cadise.

imsorry....i used to agree w all of you but once i really got into music...you arent a drummer unless you have the gift to read write hear etc music...this movie only made battling other drumlines illegal at my school...also in a real drumline you have to pass before you play, and actually know how to play....not fake it w a double who can play....yup....mr nick cannon isnt a real drummer... maybe to the level of a freshman in high schoool....(a slow one)

I like when they play the songs and the movie isnt boring. There are no other drum movies like this. I dont even think there are even any drum movies @ all like this one.

Drumline was good. It reflects how band life is. However...the bands from predominantly African American schools are not the greatest marching bands out there. There are huge differences, pros and cons, whatever you want to call it. These types of bands are more for show, and rely on music selection and fancy marching. They lack control because of this (high stepping as opposed to regular marching). Field formations are very very basic and a lot of times, they are spent in a stationary position. If you compare this to the national drum and bugle corps, you'll notice that they have complex field formations, intricate music selections, and more demanding shows. The only problem is that a lot of these bands use very "dry" selections, and although they are technically proficient, they don't have entertaining pieces.

Go to Youtube.com and look up "DCI" to see what I mean...

I dont want to bring the page down, with my comment... But Drumline the Movie was only good at showing the life of a band member of a show band. Corps style marching/ corps style marching bands go through way more than show bands to get prepared. So really the movie only tells half a story of what BAND as a whole is really about.

Aside from that, Nick Cannon never played any of the hard licks in the movie, he had a hand double. And the drumlines were never clean except for parts of the drum battle with the opposing drumline.

The Bands in the Movie were pretty good, But the drumlines were inferior compared to those of DCI, DCA, WGI and High School Corps Style Marching Bands.

The movie was ok, but barely tells the story of band that people here says it does. I give it a -4.

p.s. A second drumline movie would be a disaster, even though I respect the smiley band, and their drumline *rumored to be in the next movie*, the first one was bad enough, making a second is just .... stupid.

Would the black people raving about how much they loved "Drumline" have loved it if it had featured a white drummer and rock music rather than a black drummer and hip-hop? (How do I know a lot of the comments on this page are made by black people? Names like Tashima, Aaron A.K.A LilRoma, Jamal, GEORGE PRICE A.K.A G4, and Jay-c are usually a big tip-off). And by the way, does "lil angle" know she is calling herself the point where two lines meet, and not the winged being from heaven? The thing from heaven is an ANGEL, not ANGLE.
