this movie was okay, but it was nothing to scream about. a far cry better than his first movie ("the wash") it may be, but as far as movies go, I've seen much, MUCH better (and worse!) all in all, it seemed like a poor man's "save the last rap", without the saccharinely sweet romance.

the main problem I see with this film is the fact that most people cannot seem to separate the movie from the man. as if any attack on this movie is a personal attack against eminem, his morals (or lack thereof), and his music (ditto.)

I personally do not like, NOR dislike, eminem's music...I find it as amusingly entertaining as all of the other "shock music" out there. nor do I care for, or about, his personal life, or his past history. however, I will concede that "8 mile" was startingly better than what I thought it would be, even though I don't believe that marshall mathers is all that good of an actor, despite his more than formidable talent as a lyricist and stage performer.

"how hard can it be to play oneself?" I ask you.

oddly enough, however, I did have to do a project about this movie for one of my classes; analyzing its existential quandaries and thematic overtones, comparing and contrasting it to both nicholas ray's "rebel without a cause" and lukas moodysson's "fucking åmål"...in which I realized that while the films were fundamentally comperable in mindset, its true similarities were in the lead actors/actress.

eminem's b. rabbit was a subtle mixture of alexandra dahlström's fiesty elin, tempered by the solid strength of james dean's jim stark. and though it is not too far a departure from his own self, I feel the need to congratulate him on his sheer ability to totally carry a film by hardly acting at all.
