lxg.jpgThe year is 1899. Some unknown villain is terrorizing countries throughout Europe trying to spark a world war. Once the war is started, the villain will profit by selling a new breed of weapons to the different countries including tanks, metal body armor, and machine guns. Luckily, there is a group called The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen ready to put a stop to the whole thing.

The League is made up of characters from famous novels written during the 1800's. These characters include Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), Captain Nemo, Dorian Gray, Dr. Jekyll, an invisible man, and more. This League was put together to stop such threats.

I haven't heard of a concept this unique and interesting in a long time. Too bad the makers of the movie screwed the whole thing up.

Agonizing and messy
I can think of no better words to describe this movie than "agonizing" and "messy". It was agonizing to sit through it and it is agonizing to write about it. The movie was all over the place without any continuity or flow. It's like a bunch pre-filmed actions scenes thrown together for lame reasons that only insult the viewer.

Hopefully, you will read this and heed my warning:

DO NOT PAY MONEY TO SEE THIS MOVIE.

Believe me; you'll thank me in the morning.

This movie hardly had a coherent plot. The action scenes are fast and intense, but it was as though the makers said to each other, "Let's see, what's a good reason to throw in that car chase scene we already filmed?"

The characters end up in impossible situations and suddenly come with the craziest solutions without even knowing the problem. It's as though they all had copies of the script. But why should the viewer care? The characters are hardly given any time to develop in this movie at all. Each character had a least one classic book written about them. So if the makers needed material, it was available.

The computer animation was below standard and downright hideous at times. Although there are a few cool scenes and Captain Nemo's ship is impressive, the other scenes of the movie overwhelm everything else.

Some of the computer animation on the invisible man was intriguing, but it was never consistent. The invisible man would put makeup on his face so that his fellow gentlemen could see him. The makeup would only cover part of his head displaying a very cool effect that allows the viewer to only see the shapes of the man's head that are covered with makeup. Then at times, his head would suddenly be completely covered in one scene so that no special effects were needed and then in the next scene, we just couldn't see the invisible man. I guess he wiped his makeup off really quick or something.

My guess would be that they ran out of money, but how do you run out of 78 million dollars so quickly?

This was very irritating and went on throughout the whole movie.

Continuing with the lame effects, one of the nameless villains gets a hold of Dr. Jekyll's chemicals and drinks way to much. He mutates into this giant, red, monster with a hunchback. One might think he would look scary, but he really just looked retarded cartoon.

The slight bit of drama introduced in the movie simply came off as cheesy. Even Sean Connery's acting couldn't save this film. This movie is a messy, agonizing stinker of a film. I wonder what the actors thought at the premiere of this thing. Were they embarrassed? Because I sure would have been.

Save your money and see something else.

Normally, I'm with Scott. Today, I am not.

I enjoyed this movie very, very much. The cinematography is excellent, and you are unlikely to see a prettier major summer release. I didn't find the computer animation distracting, even if the uber-Hyde does look a tad cartoony.

A lot of the drama and character pieces are implied, not stated. I appreciate having a movie not hit me upside the head with a large dead fish to make a point, only to repeat the process three or four times for the boneheads behind me who still don't get it. It was refreshing to not be roughed up by the exposition.

Granted, I may be something of a steam age fan and more prone to like the movie. I expect those of you not interested in that sort of thing will likely have found other summer cinematic fare, anyway.

Every time I see the preview for this one, I think:

A) This is gonna be the most amazing movie I've seen in a long time.

or

B) This is gonna be most annoying movie I've seen in a long time.

I'm gonna have to see it, but it has an feeling about it that reminds me of "The Time Machine" - a movie that I was so hyped to see and left feeling really empty and disappointed.

I hope you're wrong Scott, but for some reason, I get the feeling you're take on it is spot on. :(

Here in colombia the movie was released just a couple of weeks ago, september the 20th, so i haven't been able to collect enough information as to speak for colombian people.
but speaking for myself, this is movie is really something, it may not have the best script, the best direction or the best acting if you wish, but the feeling of being in the europe of the early 20th century, with those characters we have read so much about and watching them work together was sensational. i felt like a little kid watching a superman movie for the first time. besides it displayed the british culture, language and characters in at its best, and i happen to be a fan of thin culture, so for me it was a great movie.

THis was an extremely disappointing movie. I went in with hopes of seeing great literatery figures come to life but instead i saw a shocking action film with no depth in the characters at all. They completely bastardised some of the characters- what the hell was with Mr Hyde. Hyde isn't meant to be huge. He's meant to be a small man. And they made him into a mindless thug with feelings not the epitome of pure evil. What was the point of bringing the character into the movie if they completely change what hes originally like?? And what the hell did Sawyer bring to the film, was he even in the comic novel???
Its not awful if you go in expecting a very average movie, but i expected something more than the usual bollocks churned out by hollywood. There is so much they could've done with the story line.

I thought the movie was amazing and the effects were cool. I think all the comments here that talk bad about the movie is that they are ****, and that they definetely dont like action and only like drama because if they like ACTION they would have liked it. The effects were cool and Sean Connery was amazing, and yeah I think Sawyer was a mistake but otherwise the movie was EXTRAORDINARY.

listen dude the film was based on a comic book, that means characters are always in impossible situations its what they do, and the directors wouldn't take stuff from the novels because its based on the comic, and there was more than one issue, so there will be more than one film, it was just to set the scene.

I think you're wrong. LXG was a great movie. Bringing every good character made together in one movie? I mean, what could be better than that. The actors are great for the roles, and I hope they make a second.

The problem is not enough of the main characters are drawn out enough...too many characters at one time. I'll go through each of the league in turn.

Quartermain: Well being the leader, his character is drawn out very well. But he's got the same "lost a loved one, I hate you all" mentality that EVERY action hero does. His character in the movie doesn't match the graphic novel's character. In the novel, he's a disillusioned drug addict.

Nemo: Nemo is too basic. "I want to stop war." There you go, character explained. He's pretty much there for the Nautilus. There are a lot of elements that don't get explained that should: his worship of Kali, his past as a pirate, all get left at wayside. The car's nice, though.

Skinner: Skinner's funny, but again, too basic. Be a good boy, and he'll be forgivened for past wrongs. Woopie. He's pretty much there for comic relief. (Although he indirecetly saves the day several times, like when he sneaks abord Gray and M's ship)

Sawyer: Sigh...this doesn't really match his book character at all...Oooo...look at me, I'm a secret agent! I never felt even remotely attached to his character, and yet he's the one who gets the best connection with Quartermain, and he gets to take out the main bad guy. Kinda ticks me off.

Jekyll: Jekyll's personal struggle is one of the highlights of the movie...having to deal with your power hungry alternate ego was a great side story. Halfwat through, though, Hyde becomes nice for no apparent reason. Why? Hyde is EVIL! Okay? Not good, EVIL!

Gray: Again, too basic. Ooo, I'm immortal. Ooo, I'm a traitor. I'm glad your face melted off, retard.

Mina: Mina's my favorite. Somewhat of an intriguing story to tell, and a great connection with most of the other characters. Nothing to complain about over here.

Overall, it was an okay movie. Not great, but not bad.

Personally, I love action movies that have a great personal story as well, such as all three Indiana Jones movies. (Last Crusade especially) The LXG movie just seemed too bland.

While I'm at it...let me just say that ALL the writers whose characters were in this movie are probably rolling in their graves right now!

I admit I missed this at the cinema and have only just caught the dvd of it but I really liked it, I also loved the graphic novel but feel it was probably unfilmable (as is vol II), I hope there is a sequel but dont expect to see Quatermain in it as Connery wont do another due to his experiences on this one

faster than a frakin modern day ferrari. And i don't want to even talk about the gay ship that wouldn't even fit through those canals. As fir your lame excuses 'i just wanna see the effects' ,just go to some 3d website and see better 3d.This movie was a huge waste of 78 million!i rate it 0/10.And the title also sucked.
