I currently work for a large, commercial real estate company. The job has its ups and downs, but one of my favorite benefits is meeting interesting people from all over the world.
My place of work is on the second floor of an office building outside of Philadelphia. There are 30 other people working for the same company on this floor with me. Although its 95 degrees outside with 98% humidity, the office stays cool with our expensive air conditioning system. The system works so well that we don’t even notice it until the system stops working… and we all start sweating.
This happened about a week ago. Although the AC was set at 65 degrees, the actual temperature on the floor was 82. Trying to find the source of the problem, I quickly found a room full of developers that had their window open. After accessing the situation, I realized that the AC was working just fine, but since they had the window open, all the cool air was being sucked out of the entire floor.
I shut the window and instructed them to keep it shut. The developers explained to me how the AC works everywhere else except in their office. I wasn’t convinced and told them to keep it shut while the AC does its magic. After a few hours, things cooled down in the office and people stopped sweating.
Two days later Two days later it was hot again. This time people were unbuttoning their shirts to stay cool. This isn’t so pleasant when some of my coworkers are built to keep their shirts closed to the public.
I immediately went to the same office full of developers that had their window open. Sure enough, that window was wide open. A couple of the developers had even bought fans to keep cool. They quickly explained to me how the AC hasn’t worked in their room these past two days. “While everyone else may be cool, it’s hotter than hell in here!” One of them explained.
Analyzing the air vent on the ceiling, I realized that it was closed. You think this is a simple problem to fix? Not in the least. I tried opening it with no prevail. After asking around, my supervisor told me that there is a key needed to open the air vents. The key was located downstairs in the CTO’s office. My supervisor was upset because he said that he actually instructed one of the developers in that room to get the key and open the vent. That obviously never happened.
After getting the key from the CTO’s office, I headed straight to the “hotter than hell” room and opened the air vent. I then closed the window and turned off all their fans. Looking around the room, I saw a man and a woman from India, a man from China, another from Pakistan, and one guy from New Orleans. I looked at them and said, “We have the smartest people from around the world in this room, yet none of you can open an air vent.”
After making this statement, a developer from Philadelphia, who was actually the guy who failed to open the air vent in the first place, walked into the room. He looked around the room and said, “Hey. Who closed the window? Don’t you know it’s hotter than hell in here?”
How many developers does it take to open an air vent? Answer: More than six.
