20 minutes makes no difference

For over a year now, I have carpooled with my boss every weekday morning. We have promptly left at 7:10 to get to work at a decent hour. The drive takes about 40 to 60 minutes depending on the traffic. We usually arrive at work at 8:00.

We have to leave at 7:10 or the school buses and crazy traffic will hold us up even longer. Even leaving at 7:15 or 7:20 will make the trip much longer than anyone can tolerate. One of the crappy parts about commuting is that traffic is on your time; not the company's.

This week, the boss had a change of pace and decided we should leave at 7:30. I asked if he was okay with getting in later, and he explained that he had a rough weekend and needed the extra rest.

Monday, we leave at 7:30 and arrive to work at 8:00. Puzzled, we both concluded that it was just a fluke. Tuesday, we leave at 7:30 and arrive at 8:00. Now something is clearly in the works here. Maybe God had seen fit to clear the traffic for us those two days.

Today, we leave at 7:30 and arrive at 8:00 once again. Now we are simply baffled. Could it be that leaving 20 minutes earlier makes no difference on the time we arrive? Or is 7:30 the magic time in which the Heavens open up a secret portal west of Philly that saves time for all those traveling through it?

Either way, we have determined to leave for work at 7:30 from now on.

20 minutes of life gained
I feel as though a whole new world has opened up for me at this point. People always talk about wishing they had extra time in the day. I have suddenly gained 20 minutes a day. This adds up to nearly an hour and a half a week, and about 90 hours a year.

Some of you may be thinking that in the past year, the boss and I have lost 90 hours for nothing. I’m going to be one of those “glass half full” guys and look at it as 90 extra hours for the next year of my life.

Hopefully, with this extra time, I’ll be able to get all those things done that I never have time for… or maybe I’ll find another way to waste 20 minutes in a day like writing about how I just gained 20 extra minutes of my life.

Could you please tell me how to access that portal here in the suburbs of the Phoenix metro area?
I especially would like to use it in coming home from work in the morning, since I work nights, during the wonderful rush hour. Hey, the Stones were right in your case: "Time is on my side, yes it is...".

I noticed the same thing. If I leave at 7:15 I get to work at 8:30, but if I leave at 7:45 I still get there at 8:30. I also noticed that if I stay at work an extra half hour I get home at the same time and I get a little extra work done. I guess the traffic just happens to clear at some magical time in every town. In case anyone cares I work in Fredericksburg, VA.
