Stopping Pop-ups Saves Life

Pop-up ads are everywhere. Even CNN.com has started using them.

798.gifOne of the many features added to Goggle's latest toolbar is the ability to block pop-up ads. This is no new concept to the Web World. Pop-up blockers have been around for some time, but not everyone, including myself, is willing to spend $10 to $20 on a utility to kill an annoying feature that shouldn't exist in the first place. Since it's not hurting anyone, I'm willing to live with it or look for alternate preventions before I spend money to stop it.

But when Google comes out with a free, pop-up blocker included with its Toolbar, then people start using it. It's not so much that it's free; it's more that it is included with the Toolbar that I already use.

I've enjoyed this pop-up blocker for months now. After getting a new computer three weeks ago, I immediately installed the Toolbar on it. A nice quirk about the blocker is that it keeps stats on how many ads it has blocked. It's great propaganda. They've got a little sign on your screen saying, "Since you started living a better life with Google, we've saved you this much headache."

Well, it's true. After three weeks, the Toolbar has blocked 798 pop-up ads on this computer alone. 798 is a lot and it got my wheels spinning. How much time have I saved with this tool?

How much time does it really save?
To come up with an estimate for the amount of time saved, I'm going to average the amount of time a pop-up ad wastes to be 2 seconds. Of course, depending on the ad, it could be much more time especially if the pop-up spawns children.

So if we use 798 ads at 2 seconds a piece, I was saved approximately 26 minutes and 36 seconds of time. I now what you're thinking, "Oh, wow. Almost a half-hour. Big deal!" Well, spread that out over a year and I save 7 hours and 40 minutes.

That's right, nearly 8 hours a year. That's one day of my life regained over the period of a year. This should be pleasant news to the time conscious. When someone robs you of your time, you can never get it back. By blocking pop-up ads, we can prevent that robbery from taking place. It will give you extra time in your life to do something else like writing an article about how much time you've saved.

So, gain life. Install pop-up blocker.

Another free pop up blocker is "Pop Up Stopper". It's free version can be downloaded from the net as well as an advanced version with other features for some cash. I used the free version and found it very effective. I now use the one on my toolbar that came with Earthlink, which I think is the same one you are using as Google is the search engine on the Earthlink start up page. All I can say to your article is "Amen". Preach it brother!

after reading this I got all worried that I was missing out on something so I looked on my colleagues computer (they have the whole google toolbar thing happening), but I already have everything I want from the toolbar in my mozilla. So no reason to go back to IE...
Still With all the wee extras we can add to our browsers these days I wonder how we managed before.
Also if you are a diehard IE lover and want to try tabbed browsing check out

scottbp,

If you are using Mozilla, there is a Google Toolbar endevour called googlebar. It's pretty slick and has some extra features that the IE version doesn't have.

Or you could just use Firebird from Mozilla, which not only natively blocks the pop-ups if you want, but also a tabbed interface, mouse gesture navigation, radial menus, image blocker (as in "Block Images From This Server"), image destroyer (which will just remove the image once, and collapse the space it used!), and a whole raft of other tools.

Firebird is also DOM-compliant, and hasn't had trouble rendering a website, and runs all the standard plug-ins: Shockwave, Quicktime, etc.

By the way, did I mention it's fast and free?

Everyone should check it out.

Gee you guys must be newbie’s, got a new toy and now your saying how much time your saving a year Bhahahahahaha.
Let me ask you this, how long does it take you to comb your hair, how long does it take you to walk across the floor, how long does it take you to open a beer can.
You’re just fooling yourself, each an every day we spent more time on doing something that is not a priority, but we do it.
Like that great site you found that has that crap you wanted to download so bad, but DAM its soooo sloooow, but you do it.
How about that web site that slowly appears and takes about 15sec’s to display, AH but you do it.
Yes popup ads are a nuisance, but if I quite remember way back in the mid 80’s and early 90’s popup ads got your attention. Oh yes WOW dam I can win $5000 if I can only catch that monkey bhahahahahaa.
Yeah well if it takes you 2sec’s to close a window and it takes you 1 minute to press the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys on windows then my opinion your one slow turtle or a person who just sits and waits for popup to appear.
Truth of the matter is if you visit a site that has pop up ads, then ignore that site simple.
If however you find that site informative and like to visit it again and it’s FREE, mind you remember who pays for the site so you can reap the harvest into your brains.
Also if you’re the type that complains about so many pop ups then I say to you this:
GET OFF THAT WAREZ OR PORNO SITE bastard!

Bad Mouth,

You've got some good thoughts. The only thing I would have to disagree with your on is the pop-up ads being related strictly to warez or porn sites. Pop-up ads can now be found on Hotmail, CNN, Washington Post, and Drudge Report.

At the time of this comment I am posting, the Google Toolbar tells me that it has blocked 1003 pop-ups so far.

To Scott
I don’t disagree about using a popup stopper and your right that popup ads can be found anywhere.
However I will say this, using popup ad blockers really don’t save you time as you think it does.
It merely just stops the windows from opening the child windows. And in most cases popup ads still appear in your browser even with the popup blocker. Especially with the free one you get like google blocker.
Like your site, it has a popup, and if I used the popup blocker I wouldn’t be able to see your little window.
Don’t think that sites are not getting smarter they are, your little popup blocker might stop some ads from appearing but it also will stop the smart sites that now have Anti popup blockers. These sites will not appear in your browser unless you shut down the popup blocker. They will just sit there in a blank white space, and you will also sit there waiting for it to appear.
Well now how much time will that save you on these sites hmm, well I gather not much.
Happy popping!

I've had it installed a few days. I'm up to 271.

I feel like I've saved a lot of time. Why? Because I don't have to play the Orbits flash games anymore. ;)

One thing I like about this site is how many idiots I can find that
can literally say GOO GOO GAA GAA.
clifgriffin: As for your comment your way out of your league.
Anyone who says they save time now because they don’t play
the games anymore is a time idler to me.
Therefore I find your comment unsatisfactory.
Even if you did save the time like you think you do,
you will waste it on something else like:
Picking your nose or scratching your ass!

Bad Mouth-The article seems to be written with a little humor, though making a legitimate point and giving information about stopping pop ups for those who would appreciate this. Clifgriffen's comment was also written with a smile, some humor. Who really cares if it saves a lot of time, if people want to stop the annoyance, so be it; if you don't, more power to you.

Well if this site was a battle ground I would love it.
Truth is read the article fool this is why I post.
Not to make a gun fight with you, are anyone for that
matter.
But to tell it like it is period.
If you want to go head to head you got my email, I’ll be more
than happy to slam you.
Next time post about the article and how much time it saves you.
If you don’t make sense to me then you can be sure I’ll be replying.
This is why articles are all off topic on this site because of
people like you.
You want an argument I’ll give you an argument, if not take your
thoughts about me and shove it where it don’t ‘ shine ‘.

Who are you god! An angle!
Who takes peoples hands and guides them like a child.
Look at your posting silly, nothing is mentioned about saving time.
Any idiot knows about popup blockers.
Stick with the topic or get lost.

BM-Actually I did mention time. That whether "it saves a lot of time" or not some may feel it worthwhile. And you set the tone by getting off subject first by not just disagreeing with someone or giving your point of view, but having to insult, or act as if others are somehow inferior to you and their opinion is not legitimate.(example: "One thing I like about this site is how many idiots I can find that can literally say GOO GOO GAA GAA"). Now that really furthered the subject.

Living up to your name? Great, I get it. How impressive. But that is why I wrote to you and threw one line at you. As usual with those who like to put down and insult others, you find it so easy to give it out but are so thin skinned yourself that you whine when anything comes back to you.

My apologies to you Scott for getting off topic; I felt the need to speak up about the way ideas are exchanged with Mr. BM. Sorry if it seemed rather confrontational. This will be my last post here.

So in keeping with the subject: I had better go so I can save some time surfing the web with my pop-up-blocker ;)

When I found this site I realize this site needed someone to
tell it like it is.
That’s why I post here because this man created this site not
just so you dumb idiots can flame someone just because they
speak the truth, but to avoid ignorant ass holes like you who
not only post idiotic information but also tend to stray off topic.
This site is about one man journal that he creates topics that he
feels is worth to him to mentioned on this site.
At the same time he wants visitors to post their OPINIONS
are to post what they FEEL about his TOPIC whether they
agree with him or not.
I’m the same way, if I feel his topic don’t make sense to me
then he can be sure I’ll be posting my thoughts and at the same
time giving some input which varies, that for you idiots is hard
to sink in.
Take a look at the Five-Day-Without-Google article he posted.
Not only did it became a havoc topic but his topic became a
place for idiots to say Oh my god I have it to dam virus.
Nothing was mentioned about him having a virus to start
with, but how he felt about not having Google.
that’s why I love the internet because I get so amazed about
how many idiots are really out there.
If you fools are stupid enough to use Norton\Mc-Fee to scan
your systems LOL then your stupid enough to get the virus
period.
Next time idiots post about the topic not because you realize
you lost your shitty shorts down the toilet.

What about the poor website owners who provide you with the free content/articles to read/use?You are basically robbing them of income by stopping pop-ups/pop-unders. Sure, 5 pop-ups a page is annoying but what about the sites that use one pop-under per VISIT!?!?

I think it is sad that people want to use other people's websites, but aren't willing to "pay the price" of seeing ads.

heh i'm pretty sure i got some sort of virus thats messing with googles popup blocker:

www.mg315.com/stuff/google.jpg

oh and in response to Ask Webmaster. i understand that many free sites use popups or popunders to provide the income to keep the site running, but is it really worth it to annoy customers just to provide information without charging? there are much better ways of making money...google adsense is a perfect example. and for every site that has popups, theres 10 others a web surfer can go to without popups. Albeit the information might not be as good, but many if not most are willing to sacrifice quality to get information quickly and without annoyances. Imagine if amazon.com had 5 popups everytime you looked at a page on their site. I guarantee you their sales would drop.

but this isnt meant to be an arguement on the morality of using popups, but rather a discussion on how useful popup blockers are. I don't want to start i fight, just voice my opinion.

789 blocked... sounds to me like you have a bad adware problem :)

seriously though I used IE as my one and only browser for about two years and it's only blocked a 124,

But I've moved to FireFox now and it doesn't get pop up adds at all... period.

So I suggest either running some anti-malware programs or switching to Fire Fox
