A few weeks ago, I was at my local electronics warehouse buying some geeky computer stuff. While I was paying for my new toys, the checkout lady said, "Would you be interested in buying an Xbox?"
For brief moment I was reminded of all the discussions I previously had with my wife about the Xbox 360 and how it would make our lives better. The ultimate conclusion was: That's cute, but not right now.
"An Xbox or an Xbox 360?" I questioned with my interest slightly peaked.
"I don't know. We just got two of them today." She walked to the back and came out yelling, "It's a 360!"
I stared at her for a few seconds, "How much?"
"400 bucks."
I breathed in deeply to grasp the temptation, "I don't think so."
"Are you sure?" She said with a devilish look in her eye.
I exhaled, "I can't. My wife would kill me."
"These are the first two we've gotten in three weeks. They're going to sell pretty quick." She cocked her head and gave me another devilish look that said you know you want to.
My nostrils flared as I realized I was being tempted by a woman to buy a high-priced toy against my wife's wishes. I took a step back and asserted to her, "No means no!"
"Uh, okay."
I took my lesser spoilers and headed home.
Proud of myself for having defeated the Devil in the desert, I called my wife. "Babe, you're not going to believe this. Microcenter had two Xbox 360s they just got in and..."
"Did you get one?" My wife interrupted with abrasively.
Baffled, "No. I thought we talked about this. We're not going to get one now, because..."
"Ah man! I can't believe you didn't get one."
"Are you kidding me?" I said somewhere in between shock denial.
"I'm completely serious. We could have sold the thing on Ebay for twice as much."
My wife's entrepreneur tendencies can be too much for a man sometimes. "Babe, I'm not buying an Xbox 360 just so you can sell it on Ebay."
"Are you crazy? We can make twice the money. That's enough to buy another 360 and have 400 bucks to spare."
Am I crazy? Yes. Because I know better than anyone that if I had bought that Xbox 360 that day, it would have been opened before I got home.
I was tempted in the desert multiple times and I resisted.
