Wearing a Dallas jersey at work

Scott Manning
March 7, 2006

roywilliams.jpgThe week before the Superbowl, my office continued a tradition of letting everyone wear jeans and the jerseys of the competing football teams. Since we're near Philly, Eagles jerseys were allowed as well.

I emailed the CEO and asked "If I've got the guts, can I wear my Dallas jersey?"

He replied, "If you've got the guts, sure."

The next day, I was sporting my Roy Williams jersey. After the first three reactions, I started keeping a log of all the comments I received.

  • "You're a brave, brave man, Scott Manning."
  • "Wait a minute! That's not a Seahawks jersey."
  • "What a bunch of crap."
  • "Is that Dallas? Oh my god."
  • "Let's see you wear that jersey to Geno's to pick us up some cheese steaks. They wouldn't hesitate to kill you."
  • "They should take you out front and hang you to make an example out of you."
  • "You son of a bitch!"

There were a few people who thought I was merely being rebellious since a Dallas jersey wasn't officially announced as approved attire for the week. To those people, I pointed out that that Roy Williams was a receiver for the Eagles. I mean, McNabb's last completed pass and touchdown throw was to him.

Nobody appreciated that comment.
